The telecoms regulator Ofcom has begun a consultation into whether or not customers can terminate their fixed contracts if the price is raised mid-contract. It is taking action in response to ‘hundreds of complaints’ about surprise price rises. Price rises in contracts will not be banned, because it might not be consistent with the European legal framework. However, soon customers may be able to escape their contracts without penalty, if the price rises.
I have been subject to a price rise in every contract I have been in so far, whether it be with O2 or Vodafone. Hopefully they will get somewhere with this investigation.
Ofcom also wants telecom firms to be more explicit if there is any chance that such price rises could occur in the future.
