What Will Nokia Announce at MWC?

Nokia MWC 2013

MWC starts tomorrow and I thought I would get your tech juices flowing with some weekend reading. Tomorrow is going to be a big day in the tech world and everyone is looking at Nokia with eager eyes. Last year they took over the show with the announcement of the Nokia 808 Pureview. Take a look at what they may announce this year:

Strongly Leaked:

Nokia Lumia 520 (Fame)

Legit-o-metre: 9/10

Rumoured specifications:

  • 4-inch Super Sensitive screen
  • 1GHz dual-core with 512MB of RAM
  • 8GB of internal storage
  • 5 megapixel rear camera
  • No front facing camera and no flash on the rear facing camera

Nokia Lumia 720 (Zeal)

Legit-o-metre: 9/10

Rumoured specifications:

  • 4.3-inch ClearBlack display
  • 1GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM
  • 8GB of internal storage
  • 6/8 megapixel rear camera
  • 1.3/2 megapixel front facing camera

Rebranding of Nokia Maps to HERE Maps on all devices

Legit-o-metre: 9/10

This change is suspected to come as Nokia solidifies its HERE brand. From the two leaked pictures above you can see that the Maps live tile says ‘HERE’. Nokia may announce new features in an updated version of their app. Also, Nokia Drive is suspected to be fully released for other Windows Phone OEM’s.

Rumoured:

Nokia Lumia 920 variant for Verizon (Laser)

Legit-o-metre: 9/10

Nokia Lumia 920 Verizon

It’s not a new device but it’s just as important as one. The Nokia Lumia 920 will most likely be heading its way to Verizon. When the Lumia 820 went over to big red it got a number of cosmetic changes so for the sake of differentiation the Lumia 920 may morph into a different shape. It may sport the updated GPU that the Lumia 920T got. This rumour is very likely as the phone has passed FCC checks. It may not be announced at MWC so I’m not going to give it 10/10 on the legit-o-meter.

Nokia 808 Pureview successor (EOS)

Legit-o-meter: 6/10

Boy do I hope this one is true! Just like at MWC last year Nokia is keeping tight wraps on what they’re announcing. Despite the 520 and 720 being leaked we cannot be sure that this will turn up. Some say that Nokia isn’t ready to announce a phone with monster Pureview specifications due to worries about its size, others say that the full 41 megapixel camera will indeed make its way to Windows Phone.

Nokia Lumia 920 successor (Catwalk)

Legit-o-metre: 3/10

The ‘Catwalk’ is rumoured to be the successor to the Nokia Lumia 920. Personally, I don’t think this device will be announced at MWC. It is too soon for Nokia to announce the 920’s successor since the Lumia 920 still has time left on its shelf life. I would expect this product to be announced at Nokia World later this year.

A Nokia Tablet

Legit-o-meter: 3/10

Despite a massive hoo-ha last week when everyone thought Nokia had accidently revealed a tablet of theirs, it turned they didn’t. Now, everyone thinks they will not announce a tablet at MWC. The device may exist but will probably stay in the works for a bit longer. We all know how cautious Stephen Elop is about getting the timing right- he’s said something along those lines more times than I can count!

Well, that’s quite a lot to be talking about! In addition to everything above, it is reported that Nokia is also planning to release a bunch of cheaper models to fight rivals in the low end market. This may mean that we will see new Asha models announced at MWC. On the other hand, they could be ‘cut-price basic phones’ along the lines of the Nokia 100.

That’s the latest scoop on what Nokia will announce at MWC this year. Will there be any surprises? Possibly, as last year the 808 Pureview stayed beneath the radar until the moment Jo Harlow pulled it out of her pocket.
